she doesn't just smile when she confronts the darkness;

she laughs

even as her hands shake.
So this is just another attempt as some minimalist poetry. I was actually inspired by something a friend of mine said, although can't remember his exact words. It was something along the lines of we can choose to be brought down by all the darkness in our lives, or we can smile about it. And that kind of stuck with me. It reminded me of a character from an epic poem in a book I read dozens of time as a child, Two Princesses of Bamarre, by Gail Carson Levine. The character was an epic hero named Drualt, whose legend was told in an epic poem named after him. He was called Drualt the Laugher because no matter what he faced, he laughed. All of this combined made me think of what a true hero is. It isn't the person who has the fanciest super powers or fanciest weapons. It isn't the person who thinks they can take on the world because they are big and strong and loud. The truest hero is the person who smiles and laughs and doesn't back down even when they are terrified, the person who might not know if they will win, but will try nonetheless. It's a feeling I can't properly put into words, but I did my best.
As usual, I hope you enjoyed this!
